Remote Key Fob Type: Non-Comfort Access
Battery: VL2020

The tools you will need:

  • Flathead screwdriver/nail clippers
  • A box cutter
  • A desoldering iron
  • A desoldering vacuum
  • A solder

Step 1

Pull out the valet key from the top of the key fob.

Step 2

The next thing is to separate the key fob into two halves. To do that, look around the edges of the device, and you will see a line. What you want to do is score around that line using a box cutter. This may take you a couple of minutes to cut through the layers. Once you’re done, remove the back cover and set it aside.

Step 3

You should be holding the cover with the internal circuit board. Gently remove the circuit board and you will see the rechargeable VL2020 battery attached.

Step 4

At the back of the circuit board are two points (aka, the legs on the battery) where the battery is attached. You need to desolder them to replace the battery.

Step 5

Place your desoldering iron on each point and heat it up using the desoldering vacuum. The desoldering vacuum will suck up the solder. Doing this repeatedly will desolder the points and you can remove the two legs the battery is attached to. This process may take a while.

Step 6

Now. take your new VL2020 battery with ninety-degree offset legs and place it through the points on the circuit board (ensure the new battery is a fit for the key fob).

Step 7

Next thing is to solder the new battery to the circuit board. Turn the device to the other side and use your solder on the two points. The new battery will stay attached.

Step 8

Finally, return the circuit board to the piece of plastic and place the cover on it. Click the device together.

That’s all it takes. Told you it wasn’t so difficult.

Now confirm that your key fob is working fine by testing it on your BMW: press any button or unlock and lock your car door to see the response.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to replace BMW X1 keys? What is the average price?

The cost of replacing a BMW x1 often ranges from $600 to $1000. However, the cost may vary as it depends on some factors such as the type of key, your location and time, original ignition or not, year of manufacture, and the dealer himself.

I just lost my BMW X1 car key and have no spare key. How do I get a replacement key?

This is a common problem. In this case, you’ve got three recommended options: Number one is to call a dealer. He/she will check some information like your car model and years to know if they can help you. The second option is towing your vehicle to the dealer. And the third is to order a new key from an online store such as Amazon.

Bottom Line

Now that you know how to replace your internal battery and get it to start working again, you wouldn’t be stranded anymore if your car key fob suddenly stopped working while driving on the road.

However, if your remote key fob still doesn’t work after following the replacement guides above, then the problem may not be the batteries. It could be the central locking system or the remote key itself. Now may be the right time to put a call through a dealer and figure out what the real issue is. Depending on your car model and year, an automotive locksmith can help make your key fob work again.
