How To Replace the E53 BMW X5 (1999-2005) Key Fob Remote Control Battery

The E53 X5 model uses the older Diamond Key shape key remote that contains a single rechargeable battery. This is more complicated to replace as the battery must be removed with a soldering gun after tearing apart the key. The new VL2020 battery with legs is then re-soldered on. It can be done and the battery itself is cheap.

In this video, I'm going to show you how to replace the battery in a BMW X5. This is the E70 variation. And this key Fob was used in years 2006 through 2013. And this is the Comfort Axis version of the key remote BMW X5. So to tell if you have the Comfort Access Key, flip your key over.

And if it has this little outline here on the back end, then you have a Comfort Access model. And that's where I'm going to show you how to replace the battery. And if you don't have this backing here, you have a Non-Comfort Access key. And this requires a bit more work. And I'll show you how to do that in a different video.

Requires some soldering. But to replace the battery in a Comfort Access key, go ahead and remove the valet key internally here. This gives you access to kind of two small holes here in the back and the middle one right next to the middle of the outline here. If you take a small Phillips screwdriver, you can just kind of pop this back, just kind of work it off, and this back will pop right off. And that gives you access into where this battery is that he'll need to replace.

This is replaceable watch battery. It's CR 2032. And just kind of pry in there and get that out. Pop that out, get a new one again, CR 2032. Just make sure the text is facing you when you pop that back in.

And it will kind of play a little bit when you depress it, just push it down and then go ahead and pop this back on. And that's it. That's how you replace the battery on a BMW X5. This is for models 2006 through 2013.

How To Replace the E70 BMW X5 (2006-2013) Non-Comfort Access Key Fob Remote Control Battery

Battery: VL2020
Fob Type: Non-Comfort Access

Here’s a video on how to replace the VL2020 rechargeable battery inside the non-comfort access version of your X5:

In this video, we're going to go over how to change the battery in a BMW. This is X5. This is a key Fob that was used from years 2006 to 2013. This was for the E70 frame of the X5. So if you look at your key Fob, the one thing you'll need to determine first is if you have Comfort Access Key or Non-Comfort Access Key.

So Comfort Access allows you to unlock the car by grabbing the handle. You don't actually have to press a button. So if you flip your key Fob over, you can see the back here. And if it has a square outline like this, this is a Comfort Access Key. And you just need a CR 2032 to change that one.

It's pretty straightforward. And I'll link to the video on how to do that. But in this video we're going to look at changing the rechargeable battery that comes in a Non-Comfort Access Key Fob. So the first thing you'll need is probably a box cutter or utility knife. And that's the score around this edge here that cuts the key Fob in half lengthwise.

So actually, if you remove the valet key first, you can get it into this top part here and start to just kind of work your way around the middle of the Fob here. And just slowly keep scoring the edges here. And you have to cut pretty deep. It may take a good amount of time and just kind of keep cutting around, cutting around. And eventually you'll be able to kind of pry this apart.

You might take a little flathead screwdriver and just start to kind of pry this middle section apart. And once you've done that, you'll get access to the middle internals of key here. And that's what we're going to be looking at. And that's changing this battery here, which is a rechargeable 3 volt VL 2020 battery. So go ahead and pull this circuit board out.

And what we'll be doing is actually desoldering two points on the back of the circuit board here. You'll see there are two spots where the legs, which are the points on the battery that attached to the circuit board. These legs are soldered into the circuit board. So I need to desolder these, grab a new VL 2020 battery that we can get on Amazon and just make sure that these legs are offset 90 degrees and not 180 degrees. Some of the batteries have legs that are 180.

And make sure you get the ones that line up with what your circuit board looks like. And if you have an X5 from 2006 - 2013 it should look like this where you want to get the 90 degree offset. So if you've never soldered or desoldered anything before, not to worry, I'd never really done it before doing this project yesterday either. So it's pretty straightforward here. We're soldering iron, which is now heated up, and we're going to just melt this solder down.

And then I've got a desoldering vacuum that came in the $20 kit I got on Amazon, and that'll suck up the solder and then kind of eject it. And then we'll get the other point over here. And same thing, heat up the solder till it all starts to melt there and then suck it up.

So make sure it's all melted down and suck it up. Okay, let's see where we're at here in terms of if this is ready to be removed from the board. I think we did a pretty good job of getting most of the solder off there. Have these little tweezers. Let's see if we got the legs and now separated.

We did. Okay. So we did a pretty good job there. Looks like there's a little bit more on this side that we could get off. All right, so we've got one leg off there.

I'm going to get a little more off of this one side here, and then we should be good to go.

Okay. I'm just melting that there was enough to separate the battery there. So we've got the battery now off and separated from the board. So you'll see, again, this VL 2020 battery has legs on it that are offset 90 degrees. So that's what the battery looks like.

So we had a new one of these. What we're going to do is just take this and place it in through the two spots for the legs on the circuit board. And now we've got that there.

Make sure the legs get set up correctly here.

Okay. All right, so we've got that on there. Now we need to solder those two points onto the board so that we have the connection there. So take a little bit of solder. Again, I got this kit for like $19, I think, on Amazon.

So I'll put a link in this video on this if you've never soldered anything before. So we're going to take a little bit of solder and then attach these two leg connections here just by touching this hot soldering iron onto the solder here and then melt it down.

Okay. That's one point there.

All right. So now we've soldered the new VL 2020 battery onto the circuit board, and now we're ready to reassemble the key Fob back together. So we've got the buttons here. You can see on the boards. Just make sure those are going down into the side with the buttons on it here.

This will place right back into here.

Okay. And then you may want to put some super glue around the edges here to make sure that this stays in because it doesn't quite clip once you've scored and taken that half part. So kind of super glue around the edges there. Then we've got a nice new battery in there. Valet key back in.

Boom. There you go. So that's how you change the rechargeable VL 2020 Battery on a BMW X5 the E70 from 2006 to 2013.

In this video, I'm going to show you how to replace your battery on your BMW X5. This is for the F15 model of the X5.

And this is for years 2014 through 2018. The first thing you're going to want to do to replace this battery is remove the valet key. So to do that, just to press this little button on this long side of the key on the side there that'll allow you to remove the valet key and then flip the key over. And in the back, right next to where the valet key spot is, there's a little hole that you can kind of insert either the key or using a small flathead screwdriver. And just right in that spot there, just kind of leverage that a little bit.

And this back will pop right off. It doesn't require a whole lot of effort, so just make sure you get this. This is the spot right here that allows you to pop that back off. And now we can see we have access to the internal watch battery. This battery is a CR 2032, CR 2032, 3 volt battery, and a pop this off just at the top here.

Remove it from the two prongs there. Take the battery out. You'll see it's got some Springs in there. And then grab a new CR 2032 battery and place it in there. I place the bottom in first and then pop in that battery.

So the two prongs attached there, go ahead and take your backing. Put this back in. Put this slanted part in first, because it's got these two spots there that really need to go in first. Once you have those, pop that back right in, put your valet key back, and boom, you've replaced the battery on your BMW X5. This is for the 2014- 2018 models.

And this is the F15 15 model.

In this video, I'm going to show you how to replace the battery in your BMW X5. This is for one of the most recent models of the 2019 year of the X5. So this is actually for the G05 model. If you don't get the new fancy display key, you get one of these kind of more standard keys. These keys are great.

It's a really easy battery to change. The first thing I want to do is to press this valet key right on the side here. Go ahead and remove that valet key. And on the back here, this whole backing comes off. And so to pop this off right next to the valet key Port, there's a little bit of an indentation right there.

You can just insert either the key itself or I like using a small flathead screwdriver. Just kind of gently pry that open, and this thing will pop right off. And you can slide it right out. This gives you access to the internal CR 2032 battery. Pop this out, take your screwdriver, or heck, you can even use a little nail Clippers here and just pop the tops of this off here.

You can see it's kind of attached here and here. And then at the base, this battery will come right out. It's got some Springs there. Pop in a new 2032 battery, put in the base here first, and then attach the two tops there. Go ahead and pop your back back in and do this base part here first along the slant there, because that's where it's got the two real larger points that keep this back attached.

So get those in there first just like so. And then you can pop the kind of top parts in there. Replace your valet key, and boom, that's how you change the replaceable battery in the BMW X5 for the 2019 and newer models for the G05.
