Ford Expedition Key Fob Battery Remote Replacement 1997 – 2019

Once Ford figured out it had a hit with it’s Explorer SUV, it was obvious a larger SUV would be on the horizon. The Expedition began the larger and larger expansion of SUVs in the US (along with our waists!). The Expedition has had nearly every Ford Key fob over the years, so I will cover each fob here and how to change the battery in your Expedition remote.

The modern smart key for the Expedition is large, and contains a simple to change CR2450 internal battery. You’ll need to pop off the back of the fob to access the battery. Here’s is the video I made that shows how to easily do this:

Alright. So in this video, I'm going to show you how to replace the Fob battery in a Ford Expedition key Fob. Looks like this Expedition I can spell. It's a more modern smart key Fob battery.

And first thing I want to do is on the front side is to press this button at the top and remove the internal valet key. Once you've done that, flip the Fob over and you can see there's kind of this backing here. And we need to pop this off, essentially. And there's two points right here in the back where you can get some leverage. And if you have a flathead screwdriver that works, you can actually just take the valet key and get underneath these points here.

And you'll be able to pop off the back end like that. Now that gives you access to the internal battery that we need to change. It's a CR 2450. It's kind of a larger coin key battery. And just pop this guy out.

There's a little spot right here, kind of about 11 O'clock. If you were looking at the battery like this again, underneath that and you can pop out this internal CR 2450 battery. Grab a new one. Make sure the positive side is facing towards you here. The positive side has the lettering, pop a new one in.

And then when you're putting this back, this back here, notice this notch at the bottom. Make sure to place that notch in first and then the rest will kind of snap back into place easily. Go ahead and put the valet key back in and boom, that's how you change the battery on Ford Expedition. And this is kind of more modern Fob user 2018 on.

And again, it's a CR 2450 battery that you'll need. Thanks.

This older smart fob takes a small CR2032 battery to change. It’s a quick and easy battery to replace. Here’s my video on changing this fob for the Expedition models during these years:

Alright. So in this video, I'm going to show you how to change the battery for Ford Expedition for the smart kind of slim key battery used from 2015 to 2017 models. So if your Fob looks like this, go ahead and turn it over and you'll see there's kind of a little latch here. Go ahead. And if you pull this down, that releases this internal valet key.

So pull out the valet key. And our goal here is we need to be able to separate this Fob. You can see this line here kind of goes all the way around. We need to pull this backing off to get access to the internal key. So we can actually do is just take the valet key and there's some slots for the valet key on here, right here and right here.

And just kind of get some leverage underneath there, like so. And you can start to get some separation here and just kind of work your way around and you can pop off this backing. Make sure that the circuit board here doesn't stay in place there. You don't need to change anything there. The actual battery is on this side that we just took off.

So right now the negative side is facing us to get this out. There's a little metal piece right here that kind of holds this contact in place. So make sure you don't pull that out. But if you have a small paper clip or a small flathead screwdriver, you can get in and just pop this coin battery out. So the battery that you need to change and get a new one is a CR 2032 3 volt coin battery.

So once you have a new one of these, make sure that the positive side, which is positive side, has a lettering. Make sure that is away from you. And the negative side is up like this. So you don't see any lettering when you put it back in. And then once you have a new battery, put that in and then this just pops back together.

So make sure that everything clips pops back into place. Go ahead and replace the valet key and that's it. That's how you change the battery Ford Expedition. And again, the battery that you need is the CR 2032 3 volt.

Thanks.

Alright. So in this video, I'm going to show you how to change the key Fob battery in a Ford Expedition. And this Fob was used in years 2010 through 2017 if you got this kind of integrated key. All right, so this has the battery inside this kind of key Fob here. And there are two pieces here to this Fob.

So basically you can see this line around the edge that goes all the way around. We need to separate these two pieces to get access to the insurance battery. So the key to this is in the upper right corner for looking at the Fob like this, right where my index finger is there. There's a little notch. You can see that notch right there.

If you can get some leverage into that notch, I actually found just using another key works really well. Get it in there and then turn and you'll be able to start to separate these two pieces. You can also get some good leverage where you might attach a keyring as well. So this will pop off into two pieces. You might see this little rubber backing.

Just make sure this stays in place on this side or that. You put it back to cover the battery. And the battery we need is CR 2032. This will fall right off. You just kind of tap it out like that.

So grab a new CR 2032, make sure the positive side, positive side is the side of the lettering that's facing you. Put that back in and then just go ahead and put this cover back on into place that will snap right in. And there you go. And that's how you change the battery on Ford Expedition for this key Fob model. And again, this battery is a CR 2032 coin battery, 3 volt.
