Hyundai Sonata Key Fob Battery Remote Replacement (2006 – 2020)

“My Hyundai Sonata smart key fob remote is no longer working as well as before. What’s the best method for a Hyundai Sonata key fob battery replacement?”

Without a doubt, the Hyundai Sonata has been the brand’s top luxury 4-door sedan for what seems like an eternity. It was the first car that made me consider buying a Hyundai (even though a rival brand would dub it [“So not a” car]).

Over the years, it has used four different types of key fobs. The “D-Shaped”, “Flip”, “Rectangular”, and “3-Button Grey Hatch” key fobs. All use the same internal CR2032 coin battery.

In this article, we save you the extra cost of a service appointment as you will discover the simplest guide to DIY Hyundai Sonata replacement battery.

Step 1

Use your small flathead screwdriver to pop open the outer case in two spots. Be careful to pop open both spots and not just one! If you just try to pry open one side, you’ll likely break the plastic on the key fob.

Step 2

Once you have the fob plastic shell open, you will need to remove two small Phillips screws to get access to the battery. Once you’ve removed those, take your small flathead and pry out the dead battery.

Step 3

Time to fix in your new battery. Install the new CR2032 coin battery and you’re all set!

Lastly, screw back on the battery cover and pop the outer plastic shell back in place.

That was an easy replacement, wasn’t it?

Step 1

The first thing is to hold down the button on the front of the key fob to remove the internal key.

Step 2

With your key out, you can see a slot just beneath the keyhole. Now, take a flat-head screwdriver, insert it into the slot, and twist gently. The two halves of the key fob will come apart seamlessly.

Step 3

Now, use your precision screwdriver (or another thin tool) to pry the battery out. The easiest way to achieve this is to come in from the right side of the battery, push it down to the bottom, and gently pull the tool backward until the battery pops out.

Step 4

Take a new CR2032 battery and install it with the face-down.

Finally, push the two halves of the key fob back together and return the internal key. To determine if the battery has power, the light on the front of the key should turn on when you push a button.

Does the power come on? Great. Excellent work!
