How to Change the Kia Forte “Smart” Key Fob Battery

Total Time: 5 minutes

1. Flip out the key

The first thing is to flip out the mechanical key.

2. Insert screwdriver, pry till snap, pull off cover

Locate the little seam in the plastic where the mechanical key came out. Insert your screwdriver into this seam and wiggle it in. When the tool gets stuck in, pry until you hear a snap. Now, simply pull the back cover off with your fingers.

3. Remove four screws with precision screwdriver

You should be looking at the four screws now. Using a precision screwdriver, remove the four screws you see on the device. Set them aside carefully so that you won’t lose them.

4. Lift little piece of plastic

Once the screws are out, lift up the little piece of plastic and set it aside also. There you have your battery.

5. Pry old battery

Insert a precision screwdriver or a toothpick into the upper part of the old battery housing and pry it out.

6. Insert new CR2032 battery from top, positive side up

Time for battery replacement. Take your new battery (CR2032) and slide it in from the top down. The positive side should face up.

7. Reassemble in reverse

In reverse order, return the pieces including the screws and mechanical key, and you’re good to go!

  • 1x CR2032 battery
  • Flat-head screwdriver

Step 1

Push the small button on the key fob to open up the emergency key blade (aka, the mechanical key).

Step 2

Turn the device over to the back. There are two plastics. Hold the upper part of the plastic while you use your flat-head screwdriver to pry out the bottom one. Your fingers or the key blade also work fine here.

Step 3

Now that you have access to the dead battery, look for an opening under the battery and insert your screwdriver here to lift the it out.

Step 4

Slide in your new battery (CR2032) with the positive side facing up. Click it into place. Remember it has to be the same battery as the old one.

Step 5

Lastly, reassemble each back cover and return the mechanical key.

What you will need:

  • 1x CR2032 battery
  • Flat-head screwdriver

Step 1

Locate the button on the back. Push it to remove the mechanical key.

Step 2

Next thing is to open up the key fob. Opposite the keyhole is a little slot you will use to separate the device. Insert your flathead screwdriver into the slot and twist it like a key. Use your fingers to bring the cover apart. Be careful not to damage the circuit board.

Step 3

Place your screwdriver under the battery to lift it out.

Step 4

Insert your new battery and click it into place properly with the text information or the positive side facing down.

Step 5

Reconnect the two halves of the key fob. Click the covers back together. Finally, return the mechanical key.

Place your Kia key fob on a flat surface. At the top of the key fob is an indentation. Insert your flathead screwdriver here and twist to separate each back cover of the device. Set aside the back cover without the battery.

Step 2

What you want to do next is remove the dead battery. Insert the same screwdriver under the battery to pull it out.

Step 3

Now that the weak battery is out, replace it with a new one. Slide the new battery in while ensuring the positive side goes facing up.

Step 4

The last thing is to line up and reassemble the cover pieces and you’re done.

Hold down the silver button and pull out the mechanical key.

Right above the keyhole is a little indentation. When you find it, insert your flathead screwdriver into the space, hold it firmly, and twist. From here, you can either work your way down the sides of the key fob with your tool to fully separate the device or you can simply remove the casing with your fingers.

Step 3

Insert your screwdriver or a thin tool to lift out the old battery.

Step 4

Now is the time for battery replacement. Slide in your new CR2032 fully charged battery. The positive side should face down. Click the battery into place.

Step 5

Finally, gently snap the key fob casing back correctly and return the mechanical key.
