Mazda CX-5 Key Fob Battery Remote Replacement DIY Years 2013-2019

Heir to the proud lineage that includes the Mazda Tribute and CX-7—the CX-5 is a pioneer of Mazda design philosophy. This compact crossover was born in 2012 and was the first Mazda to feature the KODO – Soul of Motion design language. The concept of this design focuses on recreating the form of an animal that’s ready to pounce—think potential energy. This design philosophy is what sets Mazda apart from the pack and is the reason for the CX-5’s elusive visual style.

Equally stylish is the smart key the vehicle comes with. This key fob allows you to lock, unlock, or panic your Mazda CX-5 remotely. But what’s really “smart” about it, is that you can unlock or start your vehicle while the key is in your pocket. Your CX-5 will detect the proximity of your smart key and grant you access. When your battery dies, simply slide out the handy internal key to get going.

Speaking of your battery dying, let’s get into why your really here—to change the internal battery in your CX-5 key fob! In this guide, we will show you everything you need to know to get your battery changed so you can get back out on the road in no time. Looking for another Mazda key fob?

How to replace the Mazda CX-5 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 smart key fob battery

This smart key fob can easily be opened to replace the CR2025 battery inside. Scroll down to see a full video tutorial or read on for a step by step guide.

What you will need:
• 1x CR2025 battery
• Flat-head screwdriver

First, flip your smart key over and find the small switch on the back. Push the switch down, and while holding it down, pull on the silver key ring hole to release the internal key. From here, we will need our flat-head screwdriver. Locate the grooves on the left and right walls inside the area the key came from. Insert your screwdriver into a groove and twist to loosen that side. Repeat for the groove on the other side. This will begin to separate the two halves of the key fob.

Now, there should be a separation between the two halves running down the seams on the long sides of the smart key. Insert your screwdriver into these seams, twist, and work your way down each side until you can separate the two halves of the key fob. Inside, you will find a plastic disc, remove it with your fingers to expose the battery. The CR2025 battery can simply be removed with your fingers.

Place your new battery in the compartment with the face up. Put the plastic disc back on top of the battery, click the two halves of the key fob back together, and insert your internal key. That’s it. Battery replaced. Good job!

In this video, I'm going to show you how to change the battery on the key Fob for the Mazda CX-5. Now, there is a four button version of this like I have here that has been used from 2017 to 2019 and a three button that doesn't have the hatch button here from 2013 to 2019. But they're basically the same. And it's going to be the same method to access the battery. They both use the CR 2025 battery.

So to get this thing open, we're going to just find the lever on the back and push that down, remove your valet key. And on the inside, there are these little grooves right there that you can pry open gently with a regular flathead screwdriver. So I'm just going to place that in, find a little groove and give it a twist very gently to open it up on this side. I'm going to do the same thing on the other side. Okay.

And now that they're both open, you can just kind of wiggle your way down with a little twist. Remove the back.

And now just remove this little piece of plastic securing the battery in its place. And there's our CR 2025. You can go grab your new one, slide it in, just goes right into place. Very easily. This little piece of rubber here does come off.

So just make sure it's where it needs to be and push that down, take your back and just click it back into place. And you can put your key back and you're all done. Let's say you don't have a flathead screwdriver. I'm going to show you how to access this. If you're in a pinch, you can just use your fingernails, your fingers just going in this corner.

It's pretty easy to make another opening in the side there. And if you do the same on the other side, we've now loosened it. We can take our key and put it in just about halfway, hold it securely, hold the base of the key, just give a little twist, and it just opens right back up the same as before.
