How to Replace the Key Fob Battery in a Subaru WRX

1. Press button, remove key

The first step is to remove the internal key. Simply hold down the silver button at the back of the key fob and gently pull out the key.

2. Use screwdriver to open fob

There is a small hole right above the keyhole, insert your flathead screwdriver here. Hold the key fob loosely and turn the tool like a key. This will create an opening on both sides of the key fob. Now, work your way down through the side openings to separate the key fob covers. Be careful here so the buttons do not fall out.

3. Remove old battery with screwdriver

Take out the component with the old battery. Come in from the top side of the battery and insert the corner of your screwdriver into the space between the battery and the plastic. Push or twist and the battery will pop out.

4. Insert new CR2032 battery positive up

This next step is for battery replacement. Slide in your new battery with the positive side facing up.

5. Reassemble and click key fob

What you will need:

  • 1x CR1620 battery
  • Flat-head screwdriver

Step 1

Find the little slot or indentation on the key fob (side corner) where the key ring attaches.

Step 2

Insert your flathead screwdriver into this slot and twist to create an opening on both sides of the device. Once you do that, work the screwdriver down the opening until the key fob opens up totally.

Step 3

Take out the internal component (control module) housing the battery while you set down the back covers. The next thing is to open up the device.

Step 4

Look closely at the sides of the control module, there are pieces of plastic holding it together. Using the corner of your flathead screwdriver, lift up each of the plastic pieces and the control module will come apart.

Step 5

Now you can perform your Subaru key fob battery replacement. With the metal component facing down, come in at the top left of the old battery and gently lift it out with the same screwdriver.

Step 6

Install the new battery with the positive side (with the text information) facing down.

Step 7

The last thing is to put the key fob parts back together and click. That’s all it takes!
