How to change the key fob battery in a Toyota Highlander

Total Time: 4 minutes

1. Switch, pull key out

Press down the little switch on the bottom of the key fob and pull out the mechanical key.

2. Use screwdriver to separate fob

Perpendicular to the keyhole is another slot. Gently insert the flathead screwdriver into this area, hold the device loosely, and twist. The key fob will separate.

3. Remove battery component

Set aside the two back covers while you take out the battery component.

4. Pry at indentation to remove battery

At the corner of the battery is a little indentation. Insert a precision screwdriver here, pry it back and the battery will pop right out.

5. Insert new CR2032 battery, positive up

Now put in the new battery with the positive side facing up.

6. Reattach covers and internal key, done!

Put the back covers back together and return the internal key, and you’re done!

Lock and unlock your vehicle to test the functionality of your new battery. If you did it correctly, it should work fine.

How to Replace the Toyota Highlander “Tombstone” Key Fob battery (2014-2019)

What you will need:

  • 1x CR2032 battery
  • Flat-head screwdriver

Step 1

Locate the button at the side of the key fob, press it, and pull out the internal key.

Step 2

Next thing is to separate the key fob into two halves. There is a little slot just under the keyhole. Insert your regular flathead screwdriver here. Gently twist it and the device will come apart.

Step 3

Set aside the plastic covers while you dump out the circuit board holding the battery.

Step 4

To remove the battery, hold the battery from the side, and insert the corner of your screwdriver in between the battery and the plastic behind it. Place your finger on the battery and slowly wiggle the tool with a little pressure. The battery will pop out.

Step 5

Slide in your new battery and click it in with the positive side facing up.

Step 6

Return the battery component to the plastic cover. Note that the battery must touch the circle on the plastic such that the circuit board is facing up.

Step 7

Finally, click the face of the key fob back in and return the internal key.

What you will need:

  • 1x CR2016 battery
  • Flat-head screwdriver

Step 1

Locate the slot where the key ring attaches. Now, hold your key fob so that the Toyota symbol is facing up. Insert your flathead screwdriver into this slot and turn it like a key. The back will come off.

Step 2

While still holding the key fob in the same position, set aside the back cover and take out the component housing the dead battery. Gently set down the cover part with the buttons.

Step 3

Look under the battery component, you will see a space between the black plastic and white part. Insert your flathead screwdriver into this space and twist. The device will separate and you can pull it apart with your fingers.

Step 4

Now, use the same screwdriver to lift the battery out from under. Come in from the upper side with clear plastic.

Step 5

Replace the old battery with a new one. Click it in with the plus sign facing up.

Step 6

Lastly, in reverse order, put the key fob parts together and you’re done.

What you will need:

  • 1x CR1632 battery
  • Flat-head screwdriver

Step 1

Locate the ‘PUSH’ button on the side of the key fob. Hold this button down while you pull out the internal key.

Step 2

There is a slot perpendicular to the keyhole. Insert your flathead screwdriver here and twist to separate the device into two halves. Set the covers without the battery down.

Step 3

Now you can remove the dead battery. Insert the side of the screwdriver into the top corner of the battery, and place your thumb on it as you pry it out.

Step 4

Click the new CR2016 into the right place with the positive side facing up.

Step 5

Place the battery in the cover so that it faces the circle and click the other cover back on top. Return your valet key and your key fob is ready to go!

One last thing, unlock and lock your car door to test the functionality of your new key fob battery.
