Though Mercedes-Benz builds its vehicles to last, that doesn’t mean you won’t encounter any issues. One of those problem areas may be your fob.

Don’t want to contact your dealer for their hours of service? Struggling to find information online? You can stop your search today. Below, we share all the information on the Mercedes-Benz key fob.

The Mercedes-Benz Key Fob

There are only two keys Mercedes-Benz models used today.

Smart Key

Older Mercedes-Benz vehicles use the smart key fob, which generally consists of plastic parts. New and old smart remotes require two batteries to function.

Even though the parts are plastic, the smart key still does everything smart keys can do. There’s a button for all aspects of functionality, like locking and unlocking your vehicle. Additionally, you can pop the trunk or set off a panic alarm. You can use a smart remote for keyless entry and for starting/stopping your Mercedes-Benz car.

Chrome Key

If you drive a newer Mercedes-Benz, chances are, your car uses a chrome key. Chrome remotes are capable of keyless entry and starting/stopping your vehicle at the push of a button.

Today, manufacturers make keys with metal casings for a dash of extra luxury. Both a new and old model exists for these keys.

How to Roll Down Windows & Change Mercedes-Benz Fob Settings

Do you want to roll down your closed windows before getting in the car? Hold the unlock button until your vehicle lights flash and the windows roll down. Vehicles with parts like a convertible top or sunroof easily open too. Keep holding down the button – they’ll go from closed to open just like that.

Now, plenty of vehicles let you change fob settings when you login to the infotainment display, but you can change those settings straight from the car remote (no login require).

Let’s say you want the fob only to open the driver’s door when hitting unlock. Press down your unlock and lock buttons at the same time. Want to change it back? Repeat the process!

If you have issues, email your dealership for help.

Can I Start My Car If My Fob Battery Dies?

So, your remote battery died, but you have to get your car to your dealer for replacement? No worries. You can start any Mercedes-Benz with a Start/Stop ignition quickly. You can also change the battery, saving you a trip to the dealer entirely! We wrote the info on both in this post, so you don’t need to call or email your dealer for help.

We’ll share with you how to start Mercedes vehicles with a dead fob so that you can get to the dealer for further service.

  1. After removing the blade, manually unlock your closed driver’s door. Yes, the alarm will sound, but it should turn off when your key is in the ignition.
  2. Remove the Start/Stop button from the ignition lock of your vehicles.
  3. Insert the Smart Key in your ignition.
  4. Press your brake pedal and confirm the transmission is in park.
  5. Turn your key to start the engine and release it once your engine turns over.

You should keep a close eye on the Start/Stop button. Store it in a safe spot, so you don’t have to search for it later.
